Getting child support services has never been easier. And in California, applying is also completely free.

You can also come by our offices anytime we are open. We will gladly walk you through the process one-on-one. We can accommodate virtually any language you speak.

Who Can Get Child Support Services?

Most people who are seeking child support for a child under the age of 18 quality for our services. If you are applying for CalWORKS, you will automatically be referred to our services.

Either parent can get child support services. Legal guardians can too.

You can apply if you are the person who takes primary care of the child (sometimes called the parent who receives support or the custodial parent or party).

You can also apply if you are a parent who does not take primary care of a child (sometimes called the parent who pays support or the noncustodial parent).

You can apply if you already have a child support order or if you need one.

The other parent does not have to be on your child’s birth certificate. You do not even need to be sure where the other parent lives.

You do not have to be a citizen or have immigration documentation to get child support services. The other parent on the case also does not have to be a citizen or have immigration documentation.

How Long Will It Be Until You Start to Receive Child Support?

The amount of time it takes from when you submit your application to when you start receiving child support depends on your particular situation.

Generally, the child support process is faster when parents can come to an agreement. Agreeing on child support may also allow you to avoid going to court.

Can Child Support Staff Help with Custody, Parenting Time, or Divorce?

No, our program cannot help you with legal custody or making parenting time arrangements. We also cannot help with divorce or other legal processes.

For help with custody, parenting time, and divorce, we encourage you to work with the Family Law Facilitators in your county court. Their services are free.
